There
are two opinions about the fact that the existing system of education is in
shambles. Almost daily the colleges and universities are getting into news, not
for research or scholastic achievements but for strikes, protests, processions,
gheraos of the Vice Chancellors and Principals and other non-Academic matters.
Hardly any university or college, in any part of the country, has been totally
free from this infection. The students are on the war path. They are to fight
battles, for which any excuses are good enough. The main reason for Youth’s
rebelliousness is that the syllabi and textbooks are hopelessly outdated. The
students find them pointless and irrelevant to the present needs and future
requirements. Examinations were meant for education, now the whole educational
process is geared only for examination.
As far as learning and teaching is concerned, building a good learning
environment means taking into account both psychologist’s and the instructional
perspectives. It has been well said that,
“Good
Teaching is what we can make the student do for himself “
The
teacher’s task is to create an environment in which students can learn more
effectively and overcome their shortcomings. Teaching is not stuffing the mind
of the students with information. Teachers make students to much entangled in
their work that they forget why they are studying or even why they are getting
education. All of these teachers have desires to change their student’s life
but unfortunately 95% of teachers fail in it. Because they make them busy in
day to day pity issues. Most of the time teachers teach their own prospective,
they don’t see students in this aspect and at the time of appreciation some of
them backs off so their values don’t come down, they don’t know that this
increases their values in the hearts of students. They give marks to students
for their memory instead of their intelligence. They force them to cram things
instead of seeing and thinking about them. If they let student free and let
them discover a lot of things around them, then they’ll learn better in a
healthier environment. Teachers are meant to teach those things that are not in
books. It is well said,
“Greatest
teachers teach from the heart, not from the book.”
As
far as Pakistan’s teaching system is concerned, in 2009 the ISPO team conducted
an analysis of the student performance at Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and
Orthotic Sciences (PIPOS) and concluded the situation “unsatisfactory”. PIPOS stands low in the ISPO 2010 report with a high student failure rate due
to issue related to curriculum and teaching methodology. Numerous educational
committees and conference went into all these presentations of voluminous
reports, which gathered cobwebs and which few read and the country was none the
wiser for them, so we talked revolution and practiced conservation.
Since
the situation is desperate, something has to be done immediately and the
government should embark on the implementation of the new scheme. Sometimes
teachers have pity issues in their life when they compare themselves with their
friends working in other profession. They find out that they don’t have enough
salary and they get in complex. Teacher should be mentally present in the class
to teach students well. If teacher is happy he makes student feel comfortable
with him. Teachers should be polite so that students can share their everything
with them instead of being afraid. The salary should not be behind other
professions, teaching should be given equal status to the other professions.
People should take teacher as their well wisher and a sincere friend who cares
for the future of children. Teachers should actively participate in social
activities.
The
quality teaching is the need of the time in our second language where learners
should be exposed to opportunities, they must be given confidence. As a
teacher, we must know when to teach and when to stand aside, when to explain
and when to leave students at their own. When to demonstrate and when to leave
them scope for free expression. The two very important aspects of teachings are
‘stimulation; and ‘inspiration’. The teachers must fire the enthusiasm of their
pupils. They must encourage them in the development of their natural desire to
work and to be natural.
As
a conclusion,
Teachers
need to think of their very special position in the society. They are meant to
change lives of thousand shining stars. The one symbolizing progress,
prosperity, culture and nobility of spirit, while their role of fostering the
future obliges them with honor and incomparable responsibilities.
